Youness Atbane

Choreographer & Visual artist

Youness Atbane graduated with an MA in Art, Literature and Museology from the University of Nice (2010) and currently lives and works between Casablanca and Berlin. His artistic practice draws upon his critical relationship to the field of art, its actors and geopolitics, and combines three core aspects: live performance as a space of reflection, installation making as an outcome of the performance act, and photography and drawing as an archive. All three areas are perceived to be interconnected and interdependent. The exploratory nature of his work brings together performative and narrative practices and thus reveals both discursive and formal qualities.

Atbane has pursued a range of different programmes and has gained artistic experience in the fields of performance and visual art in France, Morocco, Belgium and Spain. In 2008, he took part in the Master performing art program “EX E.R.CE08” at the CCN of Montpelier. He has exhibited his installations and performances at Casa Encendidia in Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, the parallel project in the Venice Biennale in 2011, The Talmart gallery in Paris in Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art Mohammed VI in Rabat, the Marrakech Biennale 14 & 16, the Ostrale Biennal in Dresden and recently Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco and MASS MoCA Museum in Massachusetts.
